Pair Acquitted Of Lakemba Police Drive-By

Posted

Two men have been found not guilty of a drive-by shooting attack on a south-western Sydney police station in 1998.

One police officer was injured by flying glass when at least 16 shots were fired into the Lakemba police station.

Michael Kanaan, 29, and Wassim El Asaad, 28, both pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the shooting.

Their District Court trial was told the shots were fired by men who thought police were “hassling Lebanese people”, but defence lawyers challenged the credibility of the prosecution witnesses.

After deliberating for less than two days, a District Court jury found both men not guilty.
